Context Engineering in Archeus

The science behind how Archeus manages context windows, prevents information overload, and keeps AI responses sharp.

Why Context Matters

Language models have finite context windows — the amount of text they can consider at once. When context is too small, the model loses important information. When context is too large, the model struggles to focus on relevant details. Context engineering is the discipline of optimizing what information enters the model and how it is presented.

Archeus context engineering operates at multiple levels. At the task level, it determines what information is relevant to the current objective. At the sub-agent level, it provides each agent with exactly the context it needs — not too much, not too little. At the session level, it manages conversation history to maintain continuity without overwhelming the model.

The goal is to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio in every model interaction. By providing focused, relevant context, Archeus ensures that language models produce accurate, targeted outputs rather than generic or unfocused responses.

Context Window Management

Archeus uses several techniques to manage context windows effectively. Summarization compresses long documents into key points, preserving essential information while reducing token count. Relevance filtering removes tangential information that does not contribute to the current task. Hierarchical context provides high-level summaries with drill-down details available on demand.

For multi-step tasks, context is managed across steps. Previous results are summarized and passed forward, with full details stored for reference. This approach prevents context drift — the tendency for models to lose focus as conversations grow longer — while maintaining the information needed for subsequent steps.

Sub-agent isolation is a key context management strategy. Each sub-agent operates with its own context window, containing only the information relevant to its specific sub-task. This isolation prevents information overload and ensures each agent can work optimally on its assignment.

Prompt Engineering

Context engineering extends to how information is presented to language models. Archeus structures prompts to minimize ambiguity, provides explicit instructions for output format, and includes relevant examples to guide generation. This structured prompting reduces the likelihood of misinterpretation.

The system adapts prompt strategies based on task type. Research tasks use open-ended prompts that encourage exploration. Analysis tasks use structured prompts that guide systematic evaluation. Code generation tasks use technical prompts with clear specifications and constraints.

Prompt templates are maintained and versioned, allowing continuous improvement based on output quality. Templates are tested across different model versions and task variations to ensure robustness. Failed outputs are analyzed to identify prompt improvements that prevent similar failures.

Continuous Improvement

Context engineering is not a one-time setup — it evolves based on performance data. Archeus tracks output quality metrics across different context management strategies, identifying which approaches work best for different task types and model versions.

A/B testing compares alternative context strategies on identical tasks, measuring accuracy, relevance, and user satisfaction. Successful strategies are promoted to production, while underperforming approaches are analyzed for improvement opportunities.

The feedback loop between output quality and context strategy creates a self-improving system. As more tasks are processed, the context engineering algorithms become more effective at optimizing model interactions. This continuous improvement ensures that Archeus output quality increases over time.
